SUBJECT:    Cabbage Practical to Replant Clarification in Hidalgo County, Texas, for the 2000 Crop Year

BACKGROUND:

In Hidalgo County, Texas, the planting period for cabbage is July 15 to December 15. An issue has been raised regarding whether cabbage damaged prior to the final planting date of

December 15 is required to be replanted.

Information obtained from Texas A&M University Agricultural Research and Extension Center indicates it is practical to replant cabbage within 45 days of the original planting, but not later than December 15. This information also identifies two limitations to replanting. First, a replanted crop may not meet the marketing window for the originally planted crop. Second, beyond 45 days after the original planting, disease organisms are far more likely to affect a replanting.

ACTION:

In Hidalgo County, Texas, for the 2000 crop year, the information as provided above by Texas A&M University should be used in considering the practicality of replanting cabbage. Replanting should generally occur within 45 days of the original planting, but not later than the December 15 final planting date, provided that all other contract provisions regarding the practicality to replant have been met.
